Government Plan To Solve Driver Shortage

Posted by Matthew on 14th December 2016

Perhaps you did or didn't know there has been a driver shortage of late. This in fact stretches back to the crash of 2008/9. While the supply and demand of drivers naturally ebs and flows with the economy, it has all been in one direction for quite some time. This shortage is confounded by the fact that many current drivers are near retirement age, with 40,000 set to leave next year alone.

So it is good news that the government recently set up a task force to investigate bringing more new drivers in to the industry.

The issues being looked at include how to get newly passed drivers past the initial stage when they have no experience (buddying up has been suggested), and bringing more women in to what is traditionally a white male dominated industry.

Other ideas include improving safety, and facilities on routes.
